Gettysburg Borough and Cumberland Township Renew Police Regionalization Discussions

The Cumberland Township Supervisors and Gettysburg’s Mayor and Borough Council have decided to renew discussions that ended in 2013 to study police regionalization.  The elected officials and managers from both municipalities met in executive session on October 16, 2019 to discuss the feasibility of renewing police regionalization discussions. The 4:00 p.m. meeting at the Gettysburg Recreation Park concluded with the authorization of both managers to author a Request for Proposal (RFP) to update the 2013 Regional Police Study that was conducted by the Pennsylvania Governor’s Center for Local Government Services.  “The updated study will build on the good work completed in 2013 and will address some items that were not covered in the 2013 study.”, said Susan Naugle, president of Gettysburg Borough Council.

The Request for Proposal will be submitted to law enforcement consulting professionals and then reviewed by Cumberland Township and Gettysburg Borough in 2020.  Both municipalities have committed to budgeting for the study in their respective 2020 budgets. Once the RFPs are received, the elected officials of both Cumberland Township and Gettysburg Borough will decide whether to proceed with updating the 2013 Study.  If the Study is authorized there is no timeline to make any final decisions. “If we decide to move in the direction of police regionalization, it will be a multi-year planning effort”, said Barbara Underwood, chairwoman of the Cumberland Township Board of Supervisors.
