What can I do about my old windows?

Windows are an important character-defining feature of historic buildings. In Gettysburg, the Historic Architectural Review Board (HARB) encourages retention of existing windows over replacement whenever possible. The Gettysburg Design Guide addresses the preferred style and treatment of windows in the Historic District on pages 39-48. If replacement is truly necessary, a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) must be granted prior to any work taking place.

Many property owners in the Gettysburg Historic District, at one point or another, consider replacing the original or historic windows in their building. Most aren't aware that old windows can be repaired and made more energy efficient, often through less expensive means that total replacement. Contact the Gettysburg Borough Department of Planning, Zoning and Historic Preservation for information on what options may be available to you.
