The small Normandy town of Ste. Mere Eglise established Sister City relations with Gettysburg in 1993. The relationship grew through the historic significance of each community. Ste. Mere was the first French town to be liberated during the D-Day Invasion of June 5 - 6, 1944. It lies just inland from the beaches of Normandy were Allied Forces landed during World War II. It is a small town of approximately 1,600 people and was originally founded in the 11th Century. A delegation of Gettysburg citizens and leaders recently visited Ste. Mere to help celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the D-day Invasion.
